Reoccurring Ear Infections

Reoccurring Ear Infections

What Is an Ear Infection?

An ear infection, also referred to as otitis media, is an infection of the middle ear commonly caused by bacteria or viruses.

Ear infections are more common in children than adults, which is why your child could be experiencing reocurring ear infections.  It’s approximated that five out of six children will be diagnosed with an ear infection before the age of three.

What Are Common Symptoms of Ear Infections?

Ear pain (especially when lying down), trouble sleeping, drainage of fluid from the afflicted ear, headache, and fevers, as well as hearing loss in extreme cases are all symptoms of ear infections in children.

Pay attention when your child seems fussier than usual, is tugging at their ears, or has a loss of balance / appetite.

How Is an Ear Infection Diagnosed?

Typically, diagnosis is simple and easy of the ears if an ear infection is suspected.

Your child’s healthcare provider diagnoses an ear infection based on the symptoms reported and a quick exam with an otoscope to look at the child’s ears, nose, and throat.

They will most likely listen to your child’s breathing, as well. Lab tests and imaging are very rarely required.

How Are Recurring Ear Infections Treated?

While ear infections tend to go away on their own, it’s important to manage your child’s discomfort and find any underlying causes, especially if he or she experiences recurring ear infections.

Treatment includes antibiotics for persistent bacterial infections, over-the-counter medicine such as ibuprofen for pain management, or eardrops to help with fever and discomfort.

Recurring ear infections may require treatment for other conditions contributing to symptoms, such as allergies or chronic sinusitis. In some cases, surgery may be necessary, such as ear tube placement.
